In this video we tag along with Max Langmaid. A 20 year old Rallycross driver who has already proven himself with multiple championships under his belt. He’s got huge potential to grow in the Supercar category and has given me permission to cover his car in microphones. So buckle up and prepare for some turbo action!
What we recorded
Interior:
- Behind the driver on the rollcage
- Contact mic above drivetrain (near gearbox)
- Passenger footwell on the firewall

Exhaust:
- On the bumper above the exhaust

Engine Bay:
Next to the air intake to record the turbo flutter

Pass By's:
- Trackside with the Mid Side Rig handheld

Location
Lydden Hill is a 1 mile mixed surface Race Circuit located in the South East of England and was the birthplace to Rallycross back in 1967. Being a natural amphitheatre, spectators and myself are able to view the racing from all sorts of angles and with a Media Pass you are able to get on track to film, photograph or in my case record sounds.

Final thoughts
Here are my takeaways from this trip. The Rode wireless pro transmitters I was using for some of the recordings have a maximum sample rate of 48khz. For the sake of sound design, I like to record in 96khz or higher. This is so I can pitch shift and slow down the sounds while also retaining the audio quality. It was a bit of an oversight on my part but at least I’ll know for next time.
