Wavelength EP. 3 - BULLYFINGER

Wavelength EP. 3 - BULLYFINGER

In Wavelength EP. 3, Jordan from BULLYFINGER discusses his journey from boom bap producer to sound designer. Passionate about recording live and analog drum sounds, he draws inspiration from diverse genres and vintage gear. His workflow blends hardware and minimal software, emphasising authentic sound capture and quality equipment investment.

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you started BULLYFINGER...

Failed boom bap producer turned recording nerd. I just kept finding new audio gear I wanted to record and it spun out from there. Found myself happier supplying producers with sounds than using those sounds myself to make beats with. As time goes on I am always uncovering a new instrument to record, keeping it interesting.

What drew you specifically to drum production?

As an avid vinyl drum break collector in my 20's and early 30's, I find myself constantly searching for new drum sounds. Whether it be an analog drum machine or live acoustic drums, capturing and recording these sounds bring me the most enjoyment.

Who have been the main musical influences for BULLYFINGER over the years? Any artists or albums that you would recommend?

Being a record digging guy from my beat making days I have a wide range of things I listen to. Growing up it was classic rock, Motown, heavy metal and rap. Now I just try to figure out how to capture and process sounds of all types. Studying everything from cinematic percussion hits to boom bap drums.

We've chatted back and forth on Instagram about weird and wonderful microphones. What is a favourite you've used or have in your collection?

I have really been loving all of these vintage dynamic mics I've been finding lately. The ones I've found are from brands like Electro Voice, Sennheiser and Shure. Stuff that was meant for the human voice always has a nice mid-range sound to it. Instant character for live drums.

Your sample packs are always full of character. It's evident that you use a lot of analogue gear to help craft your sound. What does your workflow look like when working inside and outside the box? (in the box = computer DAW)

All of the samples I record come from live instruments or hardware, whether analog or digital.

Hardware Equipment:

  • SP12
  • Akai MPC 2000XL
  • DSI Tempest
  • Akai S950
  • Korg DDD1
I use software to capture recordings, edit and add fx when necessary. Most of the time I leave my sounds dry so the end user can apply whatever processing they wish to. I own a very limited amount of plug-ins and try to master them like I would do with hardware.

Finally, if there was one tip you could give to beginners who are starting their beatmaking journey, what would it be?

Invest as much as you can into your hardware and microphones. Things you will never have to replace and then use the hell out of them.
